If it’s one thing that Golden Girls fans know it’s that, in times of stress, we can always count on Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia to get us through even our darkest days. Stores may be running out of toilet paper and other essentials due to COVID-19 fears, but the important thing to remember is keep calm and watch The Golden Girls! Now is also the perfect time to binge watch all your favorite episodes. The Out on the Lanai podcast had some great suggestions on Twitter:
Those are all favorites of mine, too, but here are a few more that are guaranteed to keep you laughing and raise your spirits.
“I’m a Feldman, dammit! Of Buffalo!”
This episode is worth it for that story alone, but it also features my all time favorite dress of Blanche’s.
“The moon is hangin’ awful low in the sky tonight, isn’t it…Busty?”
“Calm down, lady! You just get outta prison?”
Serious PSA, though: there’s no shame in stocking up on condoms if you think you’ll be needing them!
My Brother, My Father
“We’re collecting lingerie for needy sexy people.”
“It’s just a helluva book!”
Speaking of books, consider buying a copy of Jim Colucci’s Golden Girls Forever from an independent bookstore if you don’t already own one. Most have websites so you can order from home, and they could really use the extra support right now. These stores may also have additional Golden Girls merchandise, like the cross stitch kit, that can keep you busy and take your mind off things for a little while. Of course, there’s plenty to read for free, too, right here on The Golden Girls Fashion Corner. You can also save or print this fun Bea Arthur to color by @Gregs_Art for a fun diversion. We’d love to see what you come up with so please get in touch and share your creations with us on Twitter!
And wouldn’t you know it? The lyrics from our favorite sitcom theme song are the perfect thing to sing while you make sure to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds!
Finally, this article offers some great tips on what to do if your anxiety about the virus feels overwhelming. We’re all a little on edge right now, and the world can seem like an even scarier place then usual. The Golden Girls continue to teach us the importance of good friends and staying connected to what matters most in life. Maybe a concert or a trip that you were really looking forward to got cancelled this week, but social distancing is truly one of the best things we can do right now. Continue to check in with friends, family, and neighbors, especially those that may need a little extra help with food or other tasks. Please also only follow news and information about the virus from trusted, reputable sources. Don’t share memes or other social media posts without fact checking or verifying them first. This guide by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is one example of a trustworthy source. Many libraries are also putting together libguides with links to local resources. Click HERE for a list on the LibGuides Community, but also check the websites of your local libraries.
I would love to be able to offer a positive platitude to close this post, like we’ll all come out of this ok, but I truly don’t know that. But I do know that the best thing we can is to follow the advice of health officials to wash our hands, disinfect surfaces, avoid crowds, and stay home as much as possible for the next few weeks. I think the Girls would agree. And when in doubt…
